The White House announced today that President Joe Biden had issued a pardon for his son Hunter, who had earlier this year been convicted of felony tax and gun charges. Pardons are a power given to the president by the U.S. Constitution, specifically Article II, Section 2, Clause 1, which states:
“The President shall… have the Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.”
President Biden has only issued 25 pardons prior to today and it remains to be seen if he will issue additional ones before leaving office. For anyone wondering about a president being able to pardon themselves (because we know someone had floated that idea before SCOTUS gave them a “Get out of jail free” card), the issue has technically never been resolved. However, during the Nixon administration prior to his resignation, the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) had determined that the president did NOT possess that power, but the issue was never legally tested.
Now before we get started, it is important to note that these particular charges are very rarely brought to trial, especially when they lack other aggravating circumstances as was the case here. It is also important to note that even though Hunter Biden was clearly being targeted for prosecution because of who he is (the president’s son) and not what he did, President Biden still chose not to interfere with the legal proceedings prior to this point.
That had to be incredibly painful to watch his only surviving son be dragged through the virtual streets for no other reason than his father was the president. Still, to his credit, President Biden allowed the trial to proceed, and I sincerely believe that had VP Harris won the election, he would not have issued a pardon for his son. However, she didn’t, and he knew that any prison sentence his son faced would become a significant threat to his safety. He did what any father would do in those absurd circumstances. Good for him.
Okay, back to the transits. We don’t have an exact time that the pardon was signed, but the press release was posted at 7:30 PM EST, so we’re using that. This will be a faster breakdown than usual, so hang on tight!
Family First
This chart has a 19° Cancer ASC - the sign of home and family. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, which is one of the major players in this chart. In fact, the Sun, Moon, and Mercury are all in Sagittarius and this is significant. Sagittarius is all about truth, even if that truth is ugly to hear. We will come back to this.
President Biden is a Scorpio Sun, Taurus Moon, Sagittarius rising. This stellium is landing right in his first house of identity, forcing him to decide between being a detached and diplomatic president, or a protective father who can no longer see his son used as a target by his enemies. This was clearly an emotional choice, and he knew public opinion (Moon) would be divided. I doubt it came easily, but it was the right choice to make.
In a mundane chart, the Sun represents the country’s leader. In this case, that is President Biden, and in the 5th House of children, he is focused on the unfair targeting of his son. There was a New Moon in Sagittarius (Sun conjunct Moon) early this morning, signaling a time for fresh starts, and we have to wonder if it was at this time that President Biden decided to issue this pardon.
The news was disseminated to the public as the Moon made a conjunction at 19° Sagittarius with Mercury (communication). However, Mercury is retrograde, and this announcement was a reversal of his previous statements when he said he would not issue a pardon to Hunter. Truth matters to President Biden, but circumstances changed, and he knew his son would be in grave danger without this act.
Bullseye on the Bullshit
This conjunction is also quincunx (150°) the Cancer ASC, so even if he knows this is the right decision, it is probably still very uncomfortable to hear people focusing on his “walking back his word” with no acknowledgement of the damage that was inflicted by the GOP for political gain. The Moon-Mercury conjunction is also in opposition to Gemini Jupiter Rx, which represents the judicial system, and is sitting in the 12th House of prisons. So. Freaking. Literal.
We need to point out that Sagittarius energy is not for the faint of heart. I have a Sag Moon, IC, and Neptune conjunction. I will drop truth bombs so big, the DoD wants to line item them. They don’t call us “Sagitterrorists” for nothing! So, what happens when a transiting Sag stellium tips off a natal Sag rising?
In his press release, President Biden plainly calls out the way Hunter has only been prosecuted because he is his son and not because his crimes rose to the level of offensiveness. He pulls back on the arrow of truth and lets it fly into the bullseye of bullshit to which his family has been subjected:
“There has been an effort to break Hunter – who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution. In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me – and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.”
Fight Fire with Fire
The other placement that stands out to me is Mars at 6° Leo in the 1st House. This is conjunct President Biden’s natal Pluto (07°14’ Rx) is his 8th House, and Mars is also about to station retrograde on Friday, December 6. In fact, it is practically at its station point now and will only move forward a few minutes in the next 4 days.
That brings it close, but not exact, to a conjunction with The Orange Guy’s natal 10° Leo Pluto (12H). The Moon-Mercury conjunct is also conjunct his natal 4th House South Node (20°) - Moon (21°) conjunction, and Jupiter is conjunct his natal 10th House Uranus (17°) - North Node (20°) - Sun (22°) conjunction in Gemini.
His chart is clearly active. Will he have some big backlash to Hunter’s pardon? Obvs, but we knew that. He’s going to yammer on about this for the rest of his life, but whether it provokes anything more than talk remains to be seen.
Mars is a malefic, considered the aggressor, and often associated with violence, but is that how we want to view it here? I do wonder if we can instead see this as the first volley in the Biden Administration “fighting back” against the fascist free-for-all that is coming. It feels very “fuck with my family and country and you’ll pay the price” and I love that for us. Hell hath no fury like an angry Scorpio.
Of course, that could backfire. This is a fire dominant chart when you add in the Aries Chiron, North Node, and MC. It is also a highly mutable chart with 6 placements there. Mercury (Sag) and Jupiter (Gemini) are in mutual reception, but they are also both in the sign of their detriment. Mercury, Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune are all retrograde, and Mars is at a near standstill before its backslide. Nothing feels “good” here and that Cancer ASC has emotions running higher than Willie Nelson in outer space.
Furthermore, transiting Jupiter is near the United States’ (country’s) natal 21° Gemini Mars in the 7th House (foreign affairs, victims), and this 19° Cancer ASC is conjunct the U.S. government’s (different chart) natal Jupiter in the 8th House (foreign financial links, oppressed people, debt, death).
Is this what sets off the next insurrection? Is there some sort of hidden deal with Team Tangerine and a foreign power that involved Hunter Biden and now it’s moot? Who knows?! Astrology is theoretical and while all of that sounds very tin hat, the world has gotten pretty tin hat, tbh.
We may not understand the significance of this event (if any) on the world timeline until some point down the road, but there are a few things that are for certain:
President Biden loves his son very much and used political capital to protect him
Change is coming in hot and it’s likely to be messy
Let’s all get some rest because we know there’s another full week of shenanigans waiting!
